Blog Intro

This blog will be my student’s resource blog for the in person photography class I will host at Portrait Workshop Studio. The focus will be on high school students who seek to seriously study photography. As I deliver training sessions, I’ll post handouts, visual resources and videos to support the lesson objectives. The Blog will also serve to support students who join the studio in progress to help them “catch up.” While the timing will depend on our progress and change with input from students; the proposed sequence will be:

Meeting One: Photography Niches

Using example images that I have captured we will explore areas of study in photography. Included will be landscape photography (nature), portraiture (people), product photography, photo composites using Photoshop), 360 virtual tours, pets, wildlife. We will touch on a few weird niches I have explored included drop and smoke photography! This broad survey will perhaps spark an eventual focus area for you and help us as a group pick some areas to drill on with a class project. We will tour my new portrait studio on night one also. You will not need to bring a camera to this meeting

Meeting two: Finish Photography Niches and explore the basics of exposure control with your camera

Bring your DSLR or mirrorless camera (a camera interchangeable lenses. ) If you do not have one, you can use this class to explore one you might want to purchase. You can use mine for the hands on exercises.

Meeting Three: The role of post processing in having great images

I’ll introduce you to Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop for image editing, portrait touchup. I’ll explain why you will want these tools and how to get them.

Meeting Four: Landscape Photography Field Trip (capturing a waterfall image)

Meeting Five: Natural Light Portraits

Meeting Six: Studio Portrait with professional strobe lighting

This meeting will of course take place in my studio. We will have a child as our practice subject as we study lighting.

Parents: As Dr Mitchell I retired from the college of education at UT and have had 4 careers in education. I am a certified professional photographer, and when much younger was a high school science teacher. I enjoy investing in youth.
